Governor honors Franklinton business
By STACI WILLIAMS / Staff Writer / The Daily News / May 8, 1997
FRANKLINTON - A local business has been awarded
the Governor's top prize for
economic development.
Governor Mike Foster's Economic Development
has announced that Double B
Textiles will receive the prestigious Lantern
Award. Owners of the Franklinton
company will receive the award from Foster
at a reception which will take place at the
Governor's Mansion later this month.
"It's nice to be recognized," said Melvin Box, Sr. "We're very proud of it."
Box's two sons Melvin Jr. and "Mickey" own
the business. Both Melvin, Jr. and
Mickey are graduates of Franklinton High School.
"Double B's success is based on hard work combined
with their family and community
oriented attitude," praised Sharon Stam, Director
of the Franklinton Area Economic
Development Foundation. "They are committed
to making their business grow while
helping their community at the same time."
The award is given to only eight manufacturers
across the state. Double B was
nominated by the FAEDF and received letters
of recommendation from the Town of
Franklinton, Franklinton Chamber of Commerce
and Police Jury President Pete
Stafford.
"They were runners-up last year, so I thought
they had a good chance this year," Stam
said.
According to Stam, the committee looks at the
nominees' sales, growth and community
involvement.
"The committee wants to make sure that the
business is actually involved in the
community and Double B certainly is!" she
said.
Box said that the company owes much of its
success to the FAEDF, the Town of
Franklinton and others in the community.
"They really helped us out a lot," Box said.
"If we needed anything, they were there to
help."
Double B manufactures aprons, tote bags, t-shirts, sweatshirts, shorts and other items.
Some of the items they manufacture carry the
Fair City brand or the Double B brand.
Others goods carry the name of the company
for whom Double B made the product.
In their district, Double B was competing against
manufacturers in Tangipahoa, East
and West Baton Rouge, Iberville, Ascension,
East and West Feliciana and St. Helena
parishes among others. Only one recipient
is chosen from each of the eight districts.
"We are in a district with some quality competition," Stam said.
"I'm really pleased for them, because they
are a great company," she said. "It's nice to
see them recognized for their success."
